Hamlet
Hamlet is probably the most famous of Shakespeare's plays, or maybe even of plays in general. It is commonly referenced in other media, so it pays to know about it.
Hamlet is a tragedy, a mystery, and a story of revenge. It tells of a young Danish prince, his father recently deceased, his mother re-married to his uncle. A ghost, that has been lurking around that castle claims to be Hamlets late father, and also claims that he was murdered by Hamlet's uncle (and now step-father) and encourages Hamlet to avenge him. Hamlet agrees, and feigns madness, so that the King does not suspect his murderous plan.
Meanwhile, Polonius, the father of Ophelia, a woman that Hamlet was in love with before his father's death, and the King and queen, believe that Hamlet's strange behavior is due to the fact that he is madly in love with Ophelia again. The king and queen arrange that the two be alone together. But Hamlet does not act in love, so the King grows suspicious of Hamlet's plans.
Hamlet asks a theater troop if they would perform their play, with a scene added that is similar to the ghosts description of the death of the former king, and if Hamlet's uncle acts guilty during that scene, he'll know that he committed the murder. The king is so disturbed by the accuracy of the scene, that he orders the play to a stop. Hamlet now knows he's guilty, and is more determined then ever to kill him.
Meanwhile, Hamlet and his mother have a talk, while Polonius hides behind a curtain, and listens. But when Hamlet gets angry, Polonius is afraid he'll hurt the queen, and cries out. Hamlet thinks its his uncle, and kills Polonius from the other side of the curtain with his sword. Ophelia goes mad when she hears the death of her father, and the loss of Hamlet's love, and drowns herself.
Eventually, Hamlet kills his uncle, but was badly wounded from a recent dual, and dies as well.
